Meeting: Ken Vasko: Nittany Valley Woodturners will be demonstrating at Lumber Legacy Day, July 20, 2024, at Black Moshannon State Park in Philipsburg, PA. John Ziegler: LAWA August 1st demo (JZ will expose his turning skills – and lack thereof). John Kelsey: Video of the exceptional collection at the Museum for Art in Wood in Philly. Series of nine horse chestnut pieces, in which John experiments with how to showcase the curl of the grain (in preparation for tackling a piece of purpleheart). Karl Brachwitz: Mid Atlantic Woodturning Symposium, September 20-22, 2024; volunteers needed! The symposium will feature a raffle for one-on-one lesson with Alan Lacer. John Kelsey: LAWA Amtrak display conversation. Mike Brazeau: Flame birch handle for pizza oven ash rake. Alan Miller: Regarding Ernie Conover’s recent LAWA sessions; Alan returned to his shop to reconfigure his scrapers, and reworked several bowls. Group: Extended discussion on which tools for what use, including sharpening and burnishing. John Chalikian: Responding to request for newer turners to show their work. Fixing bowls with epoxy, and how to clean an epoxy hardener pump. Natural edge piece. Black cherry bowl following Ernie Conover’s LAWA session. Sharpening stone – request for assistance to identify it… Walnut ‘ego sticks.’ Harold Mills: Introduction, and several pieces: Natural edge golden raintree bowl. Lacewood and mahogany ‘spider’ bowl. John Kelsey: Lancaster Area Woodturners’ August meeting demo will be John Ziegler, turning a natural edge bowl, with Mr. Kelsey acting as moderator, interrogator, and intimidator. Amtrak display breakdown will be on August 8th. Randy Smith: Susquehanna Woodturners will have a hands-on meeting on August 13th, beginning at 6:00 PM. Jim Bowman: Regarding AAW survey, Jim suggests sending LAWA Amtrak display photos to AAW. Dave Bleil has done so and AAW is interested in the display setup process, and likely inclusion in October AAW article. John Ziegler: Walnut, cherry, and unidentified bud vases, plus two spalted tamarind bud vases, with ensuing discussion regarding profiles on the latter two, including Mike Peace example of five ‘test’ pieces featuring various profiles for evaluation. Ray Simmons: Richlite material discussion, and ensuing discussion regarding conservation. Jeff Hankinson: Birch box with rose engine decorated lid. Feathered birch coin dish. Ron Sheehan: September symposium reminder, and still seeking a volunteer videographer. Barry Price: Five-center weed pot using a modified Dux Chuck, plus review of Barry’s modifications. Jonathan Wilson: Comparison of Osmo Top Oil and Waterlox on burl pieces, with ensuing discussion regarding applications of each.

Pre-meeting Banter: Angelo Iafrate lesson at John Z’s shop, + Angelo-initiated AAW 2007 40 Japanese soup bowls, ‘western style,’ Angelo’s magic boxes, Ernie Conover’s dogwood box, and Jim Duxbury recollection of Andi Sullivan’s lessons to blind wood turners. Meeting: John Ziegler: LAWA’s August 6th demo will ‘feature’ John Z turning a natural edge bowl with John Kelsey moderating. Reminder regarding August 8th breakdown of the LAWA Amtrak display. Don Smith: Copper template used to make mystery pieces out of beech, English white oak, and spalted beech, each finished with sanding sealer, buffed, then ‘dry’ buffed. Don will send plans to John Kelsey to share with the group. All: Multifaceted follow-up discussion regarding buffing, filing system of turned pieces and related templates for future reference, the benefits of production and repetitive turning, and teaching and demonstrations (with a comment sent by Mike Peace referring to Dennis Belcher’s video on demonstrations.
